In a nutshell: Valley Isle Excursions’ knowledge, cultural understanding and genuine spirit of Aloha are second to none.
Minuses: Those who love to drive don’t get to!
Sound-bite: “The guide quality makes or breaks a guided tour to Hana”

Last updated 16. Nov, 2011 by Mark.
Rating:

In a nutshell: National Tropical Botanical Garden and the largest Heiau in Hawai’i
Minuses: The hours.
Sound-bite: “Wow, I didn’t realize how massive the heiau was!”
The Kahanu Garden is part of the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) and showcases many native and Polynesian introduced (“canoe”) plants. Kahanu Garden is also closely connected with the history of Maui and the Hawaiian people – both from a botanical perspective, and strong historical significance of the land and heiau. Anyone interested in …

Ka’eleku Cave (Hana Lava Tube)
Last updated 18. Aug, 2010 by Mark.
Rating:

In a nutshell: An interesting lava tube (cave) where you can explore about 1/3 mile of unusual underground formations.
Minuses: Exploration officially restricted to the 1/3 mile portion under the property (the tube is much larger.)
Sound-bite: “Lavacicles!”
Ka’eleku Cave is a cool, dark change of pace from the typical Road to Hana trip. This is the largest and most accessible lava tube in Maui, and also has many interesting features making it a must-see for those interested in caves and geology. Kids also love it, …

In a nutshell: A six acre arboretum and botanical garden with many unique specimens.
Minuses: They can’t get the taro to grow.
Sound-bite: “Let me get a photo of you hugging the tree!”
If you appreciate exotic flora, this small, free-of-charge state-owned arboretum is a must stop on the Road to Hana.
I’m a tree and plant lover, and this arboretum has always held a special place in my heart. While it may not compare in size and careful landscaping to arboretums …

Hana Maui Botanical Gardens
Last updated 20. Aug, 2010 by Mark.
Rating:

In a nutshell: This B&B sometimes confuses tourists who are looking for the Kahanu Garden.
Minuses: This probably isn’t the garden you thought you were going to.
Sound-bite: “Where’s the Heiau?”
The majority of people who aren’t staying here end up here because they think it is the Kahanu Botanical Garden down the road. While the gardens here are great if you’re a guest of the B&B, they’re not worth stopping for and paying to tour considering the impressive Kahanu Garden is just a bit …
