Yummy breakfast served here!

A Real B&B
Let me take a step back for a minute, because on Maui, what typically goes by the name “Bed & Breakfast” may surprise those who enjoy what differentiates a true B&B from other types of lodging. In fact, virtually every place billed as a “B&B” would be more accurately described as something between a standard vacation rental and an inn.

Now I know some of you might be asking “what’s the difference?” (stick with me, you’ll find out!) Those already in love with the true B&B experience should know that Windward Garden is in every way, true to its name.

Breakfast
Breakfast is often a part of the experience that B&B patrons look forward to – meeting other folks from all around the world is part of the social aspect a B&B brings into lodging. And, as far as I know, Windward Garden is the only B&B on Maui to actually serve a true breakfast!

From 8-9am breakfast is served on the downstairs lanai. The owners, Chris and Susan Gebb prepare and serve coffee, tea, juice, fruit bowl with homegrown fruit as well as berries, with yogurt and granola, eggs, bacon, toast. There are also options offered for vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free guests – and get this, they actually cook to order! French press coffee and quality table settings add a classy touch to this relaxed country setting.

Hallway

Upstairs Hallway

Guests are seated alfresco, European Cafe style – this is great, because not only does it bring you out to enjoy the fresh morning air, but on the more practical side, it gives you a little more control over who you choose to mingle with than traditional B&B family-style seating and serving.

Attention To Detail
Chris & Susan thought of everything – from fresh garden-picked flowers in every room, to quality hair & body products, bottled water, nuts & chocolates – the thoughtful attention to detail around every corner will not escape you. It is these little, genuine touches that will have folks who truly enjoy the B&B experience falling in love with this unique, secluded and romantic Maui find.

The House
This gorgeous Craftsman style house is nestled among four acres of well manicured tropical gardens. The Gebbs built the house and gardens over many years with their own hands. The home and property have clearly been a lifetime labor of love for them and you can feel it expressed in every facet.

Living Room

Living Room

At 3,000 square feet, Windward Garden is also large for a 3BR house (especially in Hawaii where our houses are much smaller than our mainland counterparts.) High ceilings, exceptionally crafted hardwood floors, tiled baths and granite countertops bring in a quality, old-style feel that blends in perfectly with the natural surroundings.

The spacious layout is complimented by high ceilings and a generous use of windows. French doors are also abundant and many serve to integrate the sizable 1,500 square feet of lanais into the living areas and guest rooms. There is so much indoor and outdoor space to spread out and enjoy!

Tastefully Decorated

Environmental
Visitors concerned with their environmental impact will appreciate that this property is very eco-friendly. Completely solar powered (backup generator is available just in case.) No chemical pesticides are used in the home or on the property, the family actively composts for their gardens and grows their own organic fruits and flowers used in the home. Those interested in sustainable communities will appreciate that aside from telephone service, this entire neighborhood is completely off the grid!

Kitchen/Dining/Living Rooms
The fully equipped kitchen is available for guests to use whenever they like. A dining area, complete with antique dining table and service for 10 is also available for a sit-down meal.

Kitchen

Kitchen

The living room is very comfortable – Flat panel TV, Dish, DVD, etc – I felt like I could melt into the super-comfy sofa when I went there recently to talk to the owners about this article! (Though if I were staying here I think the wrap-around covered lanai beckoning on the other side of the French doors would compete for my attention!)

Original artwork and antiques can be found throughout the home. In fact, even much of the construction materials (including the absolutely gorgeous hardwood floors and bedroom doors) are crafted from antique materials as well.

Gardens

The Outdoors
Outside, the grounds span 4 acres of organic tropical foliage, walking gardens, fruit trees, flowering plants, trees and orchids. The gardens mingle with well maintained lawn areas. The grounds welcome your lingering with with chairs, benches, gas grill, and even a kiddie swing hanging from a low branch.

There are also short hikes to secluded waterfalls, refreshing natural pools, and many cliffside ocean vistas.

The Neighborhood
Hoolawa is a few miles into the unofficial start of the famous Road to Hana, at the edge of the rainforest. Since Maui is small, and the resort areas are not centrally located, this private and “remote” area is ironically quite central for active people looking to experience the huge variety Maui has to offer. In fact, the North Shore area makes such a perfect home-base that I choose live in this very same community. This location is also a great choice for those who want privacy, serenity and a peaceful place to recharge since it is off the beaten tourist path.

This looks amazing! If only I had seen it a day sooner. (I just booked my lodging today.) They have done an amazing job, and kudos for living off the grid!
