Summary
Just a few steps off of the beaten path in Central Kihei, Chez Meme Baguette Bistro serves up high quality breakfast and lunch dishes in an unexpectedly lovely setting. A restaurant set in cottage complete with tended landscape and a big, shady tree; all in an industrial stretch of hot and sunny Kihei. Breakfast, brunch and dinner are currently available, with tentative plans to expand into dinner in the future. A mango nectar Mimosa is a must-try for those who imbibe.

Tip: Sit inside if you care to enjoy a mimosa as alcohol is not served on the patio.

Atmosphere
Chez Meme makes the most of the tropical climate with a few patio tables and oversized windows and vaulted ceilings that fill the dining room with cooling trade winds. Neatly tended landscape and a large Royal Poinsettia tree shade the lot and make the surrounding businesses a minor detail.

Dining
My dining companion let out a squeal when asked to meet at Chez Meme; her office is nearby and she declared Chez Meme to be her favorite! A sister restaurant to a Vancouver location, Chez Meme Baguette Bistro is relatively new on Maui. But clearly they’ve found a niche and have already expanded the dining area and menu to accommodate demand. The building itself is a remodeled home that in a previous life served as a repair shop; but the fully remodeled structure seems meant to be this open and airy restaurant. The decor and details have been carefully selected, from the tile to the high-end dining room chairs and inlaid bamboo tables. And with those hailing from Le Cordon Bleu and highly reputable dining establishments in the kitchen, diners have responded.

Fresh baked and daily delivered Brioche and breads are the foundation to many tempting dishes. French Toast Brioche is served with pure Canadian maple syrup, fresh whipped cream, powdered sugar and optional toppings of pineapple, caramelized apples and raisins or bananas. Eggs Benedict selections, including Blackened Mahi Mahi, are served with sauteed potatoes, baguette toast and homemade jam.

An efficient appetizer selection of soup, breads and a smoked salmon platter are nice to share as an afternoon snack or before lunch. Salads such as the Ratatouille with roasted red peppers, eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, onions and goat cheese and the From ‘ton with brie, poached pears and candied walnuts are served with garlic jam crostini make for a light lunch. Although we both took home leftovers, portions are satisfying but not overly large, which is all well and good when you are probably heading to the beach afterwards.

The From ‘ton is also available in sandwich form, served on fresh baguette with garlic jam and a small side salad. The combination with the baguette and garlic jam is a sweet and satisfying delight. The Nordique sandwich features smoked salmon, red onion, cucumber and a lemon dill cream cheese. Those looking for a savory option will enjoy the Cordon Bleu; Black Forest ham, chicken, mozzarella and dijon. Hamburgers are also available and served on a Brioche bun. The Deluxe comes complete with bacon, cheese, caramelized onion and “secret” sauce.

Cheze Meme has recently expanded lunch fare to include tacos. The Bourguignon- red wine braised beef short ribs with caramelized onions, or the Jarret- red wine braised lamb with roasted garlic jam, are delectable options. Kihei diners have been inquiring about dinner, so it may be worth a call to check if a dinner menu and service has been added. Day or night you may want to treat yourself to dessert; we indulged in the velvety rich chocolate mousse with fresh whipped cream and considered our sweet tooth to be more than satisfied!

Chez Meme Baguette Bistro also offers quality espresso and coffee drinks and a nice selection of wine and liquors. Fresh local ingredients and a surprisingly soothing setting are a pleasant alternative to the sun-soaked and crowded spots highly trafficked by visitors.
