Tedeschi Winery tasting room
Rating:

Pleasant Diversion: Upcountry
In a nutshell: Maui’s only winery; a pleasant Upcountry diversion.
Minuses: Wine snobs may not love the offerings.
Sound-bite: “Pineapple wine?”
DETAILS:
For most, the Tedeschi Winery probably isn’t a destination in itself, but if you’re driving the Back Side of Haleakala or are looking for a diversion after the Haleakala Crater, Ali’i Kula Lavender or the Surfing Goat Dairy, it is a pleasant one – plus the tours and wine tasting are free.
The winery grounds have much history, and were once a large estate called the Rose Ranch. (A detailed and interesting history can be found on the Tedeschi Winery Web Page)
The wine tasting room is open 10:00-5:00 and was originally a constructed for King Kalakaua who was a frequent visitor to Rose. The grounds around the Kalakaua Cottage have beautiful views and are well groomed and planted with abundant flowers, shrubs, flowering vines and stately trees. Tedeschi is very welcoming with free tours of the grounds and winery daily (10:30, 1:30 and 3:00.) The tours are short and simple, but historically informative. There are also picnic tables to enjoy a lunch or a snack you may have brought (or grab one across the road at the small Ulupalakua Store.)
Those who enjoy less expensive wines will enjoy, however for those accustomed to expensive wines (and too snobby to drink like commoners) you may not be overly impressed. However, for most, the pineapple and Maui Splash (pineapple and lilikoi) are favorites – light and fruity desert wines that make great novelty gifts for friends back home.
