Serene Private Hideaway
Pohaku House is a gated 33 acre property and wonderfully unique home. From the moment I first stepped foot on this property I thought “what a perfect spot for visitors who are looking to get away from it all.” High-end, tasteful, artistic, unobstructed and expansive bi-coastal ocean views, and even a horse!
A great ultra-private hideaway in cool and comfortable Kula – and all for the price you’d pay for a single simple rooms in one of Maui’s fancy hotels.
Custom Designed, Highest Quality
This home is designed to fit in perfectly with the surrounding environment and the house brings many elements from nature indoors seamlessly.
Pohaku means stone – and the house is constructed of loads of natural materials – stone lava rock walls, gnarled kiawe tree posts, rough hewn hardwood, bamboo floors and ceilings, granite countertops, and quality natural stone tilework.
The owners of the home are also owners of Pono Building Co., a well respected Maui contractor specializing in crafting one-of-a-kind Maui homes. The resources and experience show through every facet of the home.
Sweeping Panoramic Views
Sweeping panoramic views of the natural surroundings have been brought inside the home. Framed fabulously by the masterful placement of abundant glass, the many windows are like living photographs of the beautiful surroundings and Maui herself. Even the high natural-light casting windows showcase the blue sky and puffy passing clouds. Glorious views across the isthmus, North Shore, West Maui Mountains, Central and South shore coastlines and Haleakala are brought into every room.
Sunsets are also particularly breathtaking from this property – and you’ll get front-row tickets virtually every night. After the sun goes down you’ll see more stars than you knew existed overhead, and twinkling lights tracing the coastlines and towns below.
Horse, Goats & Tipi
The 33 acres surrounding the house are home to a beautiful horse named Steel, and a couple of friendly (and very well fed!) goats. (My kids could spend hours just visiting, petting and feeding the animals!) If you ride, the owner is well connected in the horse community on Maui, and can point you in the right direction for the perfect riding options during your visit.
Also available for rent is a large Native American Tipi on a hillside. A great place to meditate and take in the breathtaking views and spectacular sunsets.
Loaction
The location is equally perfect both for solitude and for folks looking to adventure all around our island. For active people, Kula is quite central, and you can plan on seeing a whole lot of what Maui has to offer using Kula as your base. This location is also a good option for folks splitting a stay between quiet and the more crowded and commercial resort areas.
Convenience-wise, Haleakala Crater, Upcountry, North Shore and the Back Side of Haleakala (to Hana) and Kipahulu (aka Seven Sacred Pools) are all a much more easily accessed from this location than the resort areas in West and South Maui.

From the moment I saw the doorway to your lovely cottage it was just one wonderful surprise after another: the spacious rooms, high ceilings, windows, incredible view from the lanai as I had my glass of wine at sunset. I felt such joy being there! A lovely place to entertain friends. I look forward to a return visit, possibly a family reunion.

We stayed 9 days in this amazing home away from home in Maui’s up country. There were 5 of us… my husband and I as well as our 3 teenage children.
The retreat is roomy and fit our needs in every way possible. It is beautifully furnished yet comfortable with all the amenities of home. Gorgeous bamboo floors, a well equipped kitchen with dishwasher, laundry room, bright sunny bathrooms along with a huge walk in closet for the master bedroom. The home is equipped with wireless internet as well so I was able to stay connected which was very important for me.
The views were out of this world, seeing both the North and South shore. There is a spacious yard with lounge chairs so you can sit and relax while using the outdoor gas grill or just watching the sun set after the day of exploring. There are no neighbors with nothing to obstruct your view and so we felt as if we had the whole island to ourselves!
The owners are very helpful with any questions you may have before your arrival or during your stay. They do not live on the property, but are only a short phone call away if needed.
A short drive down the mountain took us to Makowao and Paia where there are many great restaurants, cafes and fun shops. Pukalani, a very short distance, has a full supermarket and a superette where we could pick up some local favorites. It is only a short drive to many of Maui’s most spectacular beaches. Alii Kula Lavender Farm and Mt. Haleakala are only a very short drive up the mountain and are amazing!
We would highly recommend this lovely rental and will stay there on our next return to the island!!

I can’t say enough about our stay in your very special designer cottage. I wish I could take it back to New York with me.
Definitely 5 stars! I love the way you incorporated the kiawe pillars into your architecture. Divine kitchen and bathrooms! Super clean.
My husband spent mornings paragliding above the Lavender Farm while I either hiked up the mountain below him, or drove to Thompson Road to walk. Love Thompson Road, reminded me of Ireland with its horses and birds, and so green. Then we’d have brunch at La Provence (a new favorite spot!). We took your suggestion and drove to Haleakala Crater one morning: an experience I will never forget. We returned home most evenings to grill out on the lanai and take in your unbeatable sunsets. Makawao is close by and a great place to shop. Love the galleries.
Our last day we took the back route to Hana, something else we’d never done. Gorgeous. I love the dramatic views from that side of the island! We’ll definitely be back. Thank you for showing us another perspective of Maui! We always stay at Wailea Elua Village; from now on we will include time in your glorious Kula cottage.
