Lahaina is jam-packed with dining options, many that don`t seem obvious from the street, which is why keeping an eye out for hanging signs over the sidewalk is key. Koa`s Seaside Grill, whose entrance is located a few steps beyond kiosks selling jewelry and activities, is worth the discovery. It might not have a hostess stand on the sidewalk, but it has what really counts- good food and ocean frontage. Overseen by General Manager Buff Weaver and owned by the husband and wife team who have made The Gazebo in Napili a household name, Koa`s Seaside Grill offers generous portions and a gimmick-free, laid-back approach to ocean front dining.
The building literally hangs over the water- diners at the corner table on the first floor have been known to get a little splash at high tide. The bar and dining area are cozy- decor is a nod to the Hawaii of years past. Less than a dozen tables occupy the main dining floor, which lends itself well to learning a little about Maui from the friendly staff. A unique feature of this location is the open air rooftop deck on the second floor. Unobstructed ocean and sunset views pair well with any meal.
A full bar is available, with beers on tap and a wine list that is compact and features options other than the standard varietals that can be found at most restaurants. Drink prices are very reasonable when considering what you might pay at surrounding restaurants. Their cocktail menu has creations such as the Lanai Lemonade, made with Citrus Vodka, honey, rosemary, ginger syrup and lemon which would hit the spot on a hot Lahaina day.
Check out the rooftop deck for prime views and whale spotting during whale season.
Breakfast & Lunch
The breakfast menu is the tried-and-true menu from The Gazebo in Napili, including the Gazebo Fried Rice and the famous Mac Nut Specialty Pancakes with their secret recipe sweet creme topping.
Lunch includes options such as a Spinach Salad, Blackened Fish or Kalua style Pulled Pork Sandwich. Breakfast and lunch are served from 9am-3pm, helpful for those who haven`t quite adjusted to the time change or returning from a snorkel excursion.
Koa`s Seaside Grill has a daily Happy Hour from 3:00-5:30pm and weekly specials like Margarita Monday, Taco and Taquito Tuesday and Wine Wednesdays when house wines are $4 from 9am-5pm. Koa`s is a great fit when you`re looking for a casual setting, a satisfying meal and still want to take in the beauty of Maui`s ocean playground without depleting the checkbook.
We recently visited Koa`s for dinner and enjoyed dining over the ocean, as well as the live music from neighboring restaurants. The menu is varied without being overwhelming. My dining companion and I were surprised at the quantity and size of the Crispy Calamari appetizer. The thick breaded and seasoned calamari steaks, topped with asiago cheese and served with Garlic and Chipotle Aioli make for a hearty starter.
The Chipotle has a little kick and paired well with the Lanai Lemonade. The Macadamia crusted Brie is quick fried and served on a Mango and Fig chutney, served with crostini and fresh fruit makes for a delectable and rich first course. The earthiness of local roasted beets in the Beet Salad balance nicely with the fresh sweetness of poached pears, served with Baby Arugula in a White Balsamic Vinaigrette.
Generous portions continued with the main course. Fresh fish is a must-have for just about every dining establishment on Maui, and Koa`s Seaside Grill offers several choices of daily fish and preparation options. The Pan Seared Mahi-Mahi was perfectly cooked, moist and flakey and served on a tropical Beurre Blanc with a tropical salsa, white rice and a side of mixed vegetables. My companion`s Alii portion of Rock Salt Roasted Prime Rib was more than enough for one and accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes that were quickly devoured, which all received a hearty thumbs up.
As there is always room for dessert, we indulged in Koa`s Banana Ice Cream Pie. A sweet creation inspired by General Manager Buff Weaver, it marries the island diners` favorites of ice cream pie and bananas foster. A large wedge of Roselani banana and vanilla ice cream on a Macadamia Nut crust is topped with chocolate and house made Caramel sauce. Brulee bananas and whip cream accompany the ice cream pie. Dreamy.
