Should I Stay on Maui’s North Shore?

The North Shore isn’t a developed resort destination. If that’s music to your ears, our “Should I Stay on Maui’s North Shore?” article will tell you a lot more of what you can expect by choosing to stay on our North Shore.

North Shore

Summary
High quality construction throughout, and loads of windows with stunning ocean views and of the West Maui Mountains.

Dining & Kitchenette

Private, clean, modern, comfortable and affordable. The central location is perfect for active people who want to tour all around Maui while staying in a real home. If you like to skip the prepackaged resorts and find adventure, this is a great option for home-base.

Configuration & Privacy
This is an attached 1BR cottage-style unit, with the living area primarily on the second-floor. Very private, and distinctly stand-alone from the rest of the building.

Location
This home is in the Kokomo area of Haiku – which is very central to the whole island. I show a Google map below with the pin on Giggle Hill – this home is approximately a half mile south of Goggle Hill. This location is within easy reach of all of Maui. Wonderful North Shore beaches and Paia Town a 10-15 minute drive.

Outdoor shower

The bedroom lanai has a second shower – Outside – with incredible views!

I choose to live on this side of the island – it is cooler, less commercial/touristy, and very central for active folks who plan on touring all around the island.

You’re also closer to Haleakala, Road to Hana and Upcountry than the resort areas, and the resort areas are still easily within reach for day trips (an easy and unbelievably scenic ~35-45 minutes to Kihei and South Maui, about an hour to Lahaina and West Maui.)

Bathroom

Bathroom

Haiku is wetter and greener than the resort areas which are in the desert. Most of our rain comes from the tradewind cycle, so it will usually (and conveniently) come late afternoon or overnight.

While most of this area has become an eclectic mix of country-residential, the majority of Haiku is agriculturally zoned as a legacy of the plantation days. There are some small family and hobby farms out here, and this property is no exception with a cottage-scale Maui coffee roasting business on the property. Perks include farm fresh coffee right out of the roaster to make your own morning coffee with!

Most visitors enjoy the sights and sounds of a more rural and rustic lifestyle – largely without any of the irritations that some aspects of country living come with. That said, irritations are relative, and you should be a nature lover if you plan on staying outside of the tourist centers – you’ll certainly cross paths with little critters – geckos, toads and giant snails are common – and you’ll hear the sounds of coqui frogs and roosters (both at a comfortable distance.)

Thank you for allowing us to stay at your beautiful and relaxing retreat. Initially we were not planning on staying on this part of the island, but I’m so thankful we decided to split up our trip to see how serene this place really was. I was a little worried when I noticed there wasn’t a tv, but once we explored upcountry and Hana we’d come back and relax before having a great night sleep with the windows open and listening to sounds of nature…didn’t notice there wasn’t a tv. Each morning our fellow roosters would be our morning alarm clock to remind us to wake up and fall in love with Maui all over again. We’d start each morning by grinding home roasted coffee (pleasant surprise!) and then drink it watching the sunrise off lania. Can’t wait to come back on our next trip! Thanks again Melissa and Jordan!

This was my first time to island of Maui and doing a residential style accommodation. Being a single dad with a 7yr old son, I wanted to experience more of the local flavor of the island. We began our 15 day Maui adventure with our first 5 days in this beautiful and peaceful property.

Driving up the long drive way I immediately felt the stress of mainland life just melt away. Walking into the property I noticed the attention to detail the owners had taken in not only the construction of the property but the furnishings. We immediately walked out onto the lanai and had an amazing panoramic view down to the coast.

Each evening hearing the sounds of nature was an experience unto itself for these city-folk. The next door neighbors had horses and my son and I would take some carrots and apples to feed and pet them.

Everything was perfect about the property. It’s location to Makawao and Haiku and every day we ventured around this side of the island.

The owners were super accommodating and so kind to me and my son. I appreciated that our sons got to hang out, bounce on the trampoline and just run around and have fun on their lush grounds.

Very sadly our 5 days came to an end and we spent the remaining 10 days at Ka’anapali Beach, which was beautiful. But, I missed the serenity, privacy and beauty of the upcountry. The feeling of being a local quickly changed gears to a more tourist in the mega-resorts.

We will be back as the experience left a lasting impression on me and my son.

We travelled to Maui and wanted to escape the touristy and “hotel like” feel of the island. We discovered this hidden “luxury resort with a homey feel” and felt bliss. Our hosts welcomed us upon our arrival (a nice change from absent hosts during the rest of our stay) and we knew right away that we were going to find the peace and quiet we were looking for. The cottage is roomy and has everything you need. It is lavishing, charming and comfortable.

The environment is superb, surrounded by trees and a garden. The location is also perfect, offering cool evenings and nights. You go to sleep and wake up with the most wonderful sounds nature can offer. At only 10 minutes drive from Makawao, Paia and the Hana highway, the cottage is secluded enough to allow you have an intimacy and private feel. No better place to disconnect from the fast paced action of Maui.

We were simply delighted by everything the condo had to offer and couldn’t have asked for a better place to spend our second week on the island. Thank you Jordan and Melissa for sharing your wonderful “resort” with us.
