You probably know them as flip-flops.

Japanese-introduced shoes which are probably the most common footwear on the island. In case you never saw them, they’re rubber soles attached to the feet by an inverted Y strap which goes between the big toe and the second toe and to each side of the slipper.

In Hawaii it is customary to leave them outside the front door of a home when you enter. It is poor form to leave a party with a nicer pair than you came with.
