Kapalua Plantation Course

Rating: ★★★★★

In a nutshell: Mecca-status course for serious golfers.
Minuses: $$$
Sound-bite: “The wide range of tees make this course as challenging as you want it to be.”

18 hole regulation | 73 par | 7,411 yards | 75.6 USGA | 140 slope | Driving Range | GPS | Resort Attire

Opened in 1991, the Plantation Course has attained Mecca status for serious golfers to make their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage.

Host to the PGA Tour SBS Championship (formerly Mercedes-Benz) golf greats such as Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Justin Leonard, Ernie Els, Davis Love III and many more have been challenged on this course in recent years.

Tee Yardage & Ratings
  Par Yards Slope USGA
White 73 6,547 130 71.7
Championship 73 7,263 138 74.9
Red 75 5,627 117 67.5
Tournament 73 7,411 140 75.6

An absolutely spectacular and well maintained course, with views to match – while highly challenging, the wide range of tees makes it playable by all golfers.

While professional reviewers give this course top grades, online reviews on amateur/non-golfing websites are all over the board. I’m convinced that folks who left poor reviews are not used to shelling out this kind of money to play a round, and expected the fee included a maintenance crew to follow ahead and sod every divot left by the previous foursome. Folks, you can be a regular-old-golfer to play here, but you’re going to need to leave buyer’s remorse back at the hotel and be willing to drop $300 without batting an eyelash. (If you’re not a serious golfer and/or on a tight budget, check out some of our other course reviews for some great values.)

  1. Jack Sullivan says:

I have played here 3 times and am a high handicapper. While the course ate me up, I had the time of my life. If you shoot 100+ like I did but didn’t enjoy your experience,
you should probably look for another activity to fill up your spare time. The condition of the course, the views, the challenges, etc. more than make up for a 100+ round. I’d be remiss also if I failed to mention the phenomenal staff who were nothing short of professional, courteous, accommodating and friendly.
